Important information about Fees of the English Language Programs in San Diego

Application Fee (Nonrefundable): A nonrefundable $150 application fee is required for the first program. You must add the amount of the application fee to the total fee of the first program

Express Mail (optional): We recommend you to pay the expess mail fee in order to receive the application documents faster. You must add the amount of the express mail fee to the total fee of the first program

Medical Insurance (Mandatory): UC San Diego Extension medical Insurance is mandatory for all students. The medical insurance policy for international students covers hospitalization, with some exceptions, and many other medical expenses, but not dental or eye care.

International Student Services Fee (Mandatory): This fee is mandatory for students. This fee allows you access to many University Extension resources, including computer labs, academic advising, visa counseling, housing assistance, planning and implementation of recreational/social activities, a photo ID card, and many other general student needs.

Books: Books are not included in the total cost. An estimation is about $200 per session (cost varies by level & class)

The English Language Institute of UC San Diego Extension offer English programs that provides high quality instruction and offers the opportunity to study in one of the top Universities in the United States.

The English courses are officially accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) whose mission is to promote excellence in the field of English language teaching and administration through accreditation of English language programs and institutions worldwide.

UC San Diego English Language Institute offers you a variety of ESL courses, from structured skill-building to high-interest conversation to rigorous academic preparation, in all levels from beginning to advance classes.

At the beginning of the program, all students must take a placement test, which will determine the level of the student in the English program. These English classes are for student of 17 years of age and older.

Most of the English courses have a lenght of 8 or 4 weeks. Start with a minimum of one session. Then, add sessions as needed to achieve your language goals, so you can take English classes for 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, etc.

Intensive Pre-University Program - 10 weeks or more

Students improve and refine their English skills while studying one or two university courses in their area of interest at UCSD or UCSD Extension.

Program Schedule:
  • Monday - Friday
  • Classes are held between 8:30 - 4:30 PM
  • 9 weeks - 20 hours per week (first week is for orientation, registration and placement test)
Required Courses in the program:
  • 9 – 17 hours of English language instruction per week
  • 1 – 2 University or University Extension courses per week (enrollment is on a space-available basis; credits may be transferable to degree programs)
  • Core classes for fluency and comprehension
  • Wide variety of courses for academic preparation and cultural understanding

What do I need to enroll in the Intensive Pre-University Program at UCSD Extension?:

  • English Language Programs for adults. Be at least 17 years old.
  • Students must achieve an advanced level (core level 109-110) of UC San Diego-ELI proficiency with certain minimum scores on UC San Diego-ELI’s writing and and listening placement tests (equivalent to 80 iBT or IELTS 7.0)

This program focuses on conversation, fluency-building, and American culture topics. Students will have structured lessons in grammar and vocabulary development. The program focuses on developing fluency and accuracy in all language skills for academic and professional purposes. Considerable time will be spent on grammar, reading, writing, and oral discussion. Students will take part in class lectures, group work, pair work, and individual study. In addition to a homeroom academic skills class, students will have two additional courses.
