What is ELS?
ELS is an English language school founded in 1961, with centers all across the United States and in both coasts of Canada, in Toronto and Vancouver.
Why should I choose to study an English course at ELS?
ELS has nearly 60 years of English language teaching, and many of its teachers are members of TESOL, hold Master’s degrees or TEFL certificates. Moreover, it has numerous programs for students to choose, so they can find one that perfectly fits their needs and goals. Additionally, many ELS centers are located inside university campuses, so students can interact with others and have networking opportunities for a successful future career. Finally, other features include: class visitation opportunities to see real university classes, conversation partnership programs to connect with native speakers, custom made class materials exclusive for ELS students, and volunteering programs to engage with the local community and improve their English skills outside the classroom.
Is there a minimum age to apply for an English course at ELS?
It varies depending on the center. It's between 14 and 18 years old. There are also junior programs for children and teenagers.
Do students need a High School diploma to apply? Can they apply if they are still in High School?
There is no need for a high school diploma, as students under 18 years old can still apply.
Is there any deadline to apply?
There's no deadline, but students should apply in advance due to visa requirements.
How is my English proficiency level tested?
With a placement test before classes start.
Do I receive any certification or documents by the end of the course?
Yes, you receive a completion certificate.
I am not a student in my home country. Can I take these English language courses with a student visa?
Yes, anyone can apply for a student visa and study at ELS. Students only need to meet the minimum requirements, such as being over the set minimum age.
Can I enroll on these ESL courses with a tourist visa or a visa waiver?
Yes, you can study with a tourist visa or waiver, as long as you do not require a student visa/study permit due to the course’s length or hours per week.
What are the school’s English language levels?
Four levels, each divided in three: Beginner (101, 102, 103), Intermediate (104, 105, 106), Advanced (107, 108, 109), and Masters (110, 111, 112).
How many students are in each class?
15 students maximum, 20 in some cases for special lessons.
What is the schedule of classes? Hours per week?
Only morning, and morning and afternoon classes in some cases. Lessons last 50 minutes, and courses go from 15 lessons a week, up to 30 lessons per week for intensive programs.
What kind of accommodations are available?
Homestays and private rental providers partnered with ELS. Additionally, some ELS centers are located inside university campuses, and on-campus housing might be available during certain dates.
Are there any extracurricular activities?
Some courses include special extracurricular activities within the course's fees. Students might also participate in free activities around campus if the ELS center is located inside one.
Do I need to buy health insurance?
Depending on the country where you will study, your visa status and the length of your studies, you may need to obtain health insurance. This can either be travel insurance or insurance offered by an American/Canadian insurance company if required.
Do I need to buy any books?
No, they are included as an additional materials and technology fee of $105.
Is there an application fee for the English courses?
Yes, there is a $180 application fee paid with a credit card authorization, and a $110 fee if students request for the form I-20 and the acceptance letter to be sent via express mail.
When do I pay? What are the payment methods for these ESL courses?
You must pay for the program before arriving at the ELS center. Ideally, 4 weeks before the start date, this has to be paid with credit card.
Are there any scholarships for the English courses?
No, there are no scholarships to study at ELS. However, there may be special tuition fee discounts for some students. Contact us for more information.
