In terms of quality, value, and total educational experience, the Intensive English Program (IEP) of the University of Alabama is one of the best intensive English programs in the United States (ESL). The Intensive English Program offers 6 levels of instructions:

The students take the ELI Placement Exam on the first day of the session and are placed in the appropriate level for each core class (Reading/Writing, Speaking/Listening, Structure). Core classes, which meet for a total of 20-25 hours per week, are the foundation of the ELI program of study. “Required core classes” are offered each session at each level and consist of the following:
- Reading/Writing: 9 hours per week
- Speaking/Listening: 6 hours per week
- Structure(grammar): 5 hours per week
A student may be placed into a different level for each required core class (there are 6 levels), depending on his or her ability in that area. For example, a student may have Reading/Writing 3, Speaking/Listening 4, and Structure 2. Students advance from level to level as a result of the grades they earn in each of their required core classes; students who excel may be eligible to skip a level.
The English Language Institute also offers a variety of advanced elective classes which are available to students in Levels 4, 5, and 6. For example, Oral Communication is designed for students who wish to concentrate on improving their speaking and listening in English, and TOEFL Preparation is available to students who wish to focus on improving their TOEFL scores.
ENGLISH + BUSINESS PROGRAM
The English + Business Program is a full-time course offered by the English Language Institute and The Culverhouse College of Commerce. It is specially prepared for professionals who want to learn more about how business is done in the USA and expand their knowledge about different key concepts. It includes the core English lessons, 4 lectures by invited business professors, 1-2 visits to local corporations or business, a welcome reception, and a final completion certificate. Details about the English + Business Program at the University of Alabama
The English + Business Program of the University of Alabama is a four or eight week program designed for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their English Language skills and learn about business concepts and practices in the United States. The English + Business Program (EBP) is offered throughout the year by English Language Institute (ELI) of The University of Alabama (UA), in cooperation with the UA College of Commerce & Business Administration (C&BA).
Some Key features of the English + Business Program include the following:
- Provides training in English and business for non-native speakers of English
- Includes 40+ hours of English instruction and 15-20 hours of business lectures

Program Curriculum
Intensive English (40+ hours of instruction)
Participants are integrated into the ELI’s Intensive English Program, each student at his/her appropriate level of instruction in Levels 1-6.
Each student’s proficiency in English and appropriate ELI level of instruction will be determined by means of the ELI Placement Exam, which is administered at the beginning of the program.
Business Lectures/Workshops (12 – 16 hours of instruction)
The UA College of Commerce & Business Administration offers between six and eight business-related lectures. Each lecture focuses on a different area of business study related to the following general topics:
- Marketing
- Management
- Business concepts
- Business ethics
- Business communication
- Business practices in the US
- Computer applications
- Trade between Alabama and the world
Lectures are scheduled in the afternoons two or three days per week and will be held in C&BA or other classrooms on the UA campus. Each lecture is scheduled for approximately two hours, including time for questions and discussion.

One of the corporate visits is typically to Mercedes-Benz US International, which is located in Tuscaloosa County. Other possible visits include, but are not limited to, local corporations in the following fields:

Program Curriculum
Intensive English (45+ hours of instruction):
Students will take English classes in Reading/Writing and Speaking/Listening. Moreover, they take a Hospitality Management English class, on top of the hospitality lectures and workshops. The English level of students is assessed with a placement test at the beginning of the program. English lessons take place during the morning, from Monday to Friday.
Hospitality Management Lectures/Workshops (4 lectures)
The UA College of Human Environmental Sciences, as well as other University of Alabama colleges and departments, offer a minimum of 4 lectures related to hospitality Management. These normally focus on different areas of the hospitality industry, such as:
- Meetings and Events Management
- Hotel Operation
- Food/Beverage
- Sports Operation and Management
Lectures take place in the afternoons, one day per week. Each lecture lasts around 90 minutes, including time for questions and answers.
Corporate Visits (1 – 2 visits)

For example if you want to study for approximately 6 months, you can take the Fall 1, Fall 2 and Spring 1 sessions. You will not repeat the same course, because each session will be in a different level.
Other costs to consider
On top of the tuition fee, students must consider other costs, such as the application and mail fees, visa costs, accommodation, food, among others. These are the following:
- Tuition deposit: US$250, which is refunded in case of visa denial.
- Application fee: a US$75 non-refundable fee paid upon your application, which is valid for one year.
- University Student fee: a variable fee that will depend on the length of your program.
- Visa costs: international students who enroll on a full-time program in the USA need the F-1 student visa. Costs related to the F-1 visa include the I-901 SEVIS Fee (US$350 aprox) to register on the Student Exchange Visitor Information System and a Visa fee (US$160 aprox). These are costs set by the U.S. government.
- Accommodation in Tuscaloosa: since you will be living and studying abroad, you should consider certain housing costs. Down below you can read some of the options UA recommends for foreign students.
- Health insurance: all those who are on a student visa in the US must have a mandatory health insurance, which is offered by UA, and costs approximately US$55 per week.

Clear Copy of the identification page of your passport. The passport must be valid for 6 months after the first day of classes.
3. Financial Verification
Bank letter or bank statement that shows that you or your sponsor have at least the "Estimated Total Expense" of the program. Amounts can be in US dollars or your local currency.
The estimated total expense is an estimate made by the university that includes tuition fees, and an estimate of what you might spend in medical insurance, housing, meals, books and supplies. Flight tickets are not included in this estimation.

4. Application Fee
Non-refundable application fee of $50 dollars and a $250 tuition deposit paid to the The English Language Institute. After receiving confirmation from one of our representatives, you must pay the application fee online, following the instructions mentioned by the representative.

2. Acceptance Process
After we have received all your application documents and you have paid the application fee, you will be contacted by the admission office within 2 weeks.
If you are applying for a full-time program, you will need an F-1 student visa. After you have been accepted in the program, the admission office will send you the acceptance documents plus the form I-20, needed to apply for the F-1 student visa.
3. Visa Processing
Please check with us what type of visa you need, depending on the program you are interested in at UA.
- If the program you are applying for is a full-time program (18hrs/week or more), you will need the F-1 student visa. With an F-1 visa you can extend your stay in the United States as long as you continue studying.
- If your program is less than 18 hours a week, you will have to travel to the U.S. as a tourist with a B1/B2 tourist visa or visa waiver ESTA. As a tourist, you can only stay in the U.S. the time period your tourist visa allows, since your main purpose in the U.S. should be tourism.

Generally, for a F-1 student visa, students must do the following:
- Complete the DS-160 form
- Schedule an appointment at the U.S. embassy
- Pay for the F-1 student visa (approx. US$160)

- Go to the embassy on the scheduled day

4. Payment
Next, you need to make full payment of all remaining fees, which is due at registration and can be done by credit card, money order, personal check from an US bank, or cash. You can also make an online payment through Flywire or on the UA website. You will receive more information regarding dates once you begin the application process.
5. Arrival at School
You should arrive a week before the program start date to attend the orientation at the end of registration week. On your admission letter you can find more information about the orientation and the initial placement test. On the first day at school you should bring your passport, F-1 student visa, I-20 and I-94 card. You must also fill in an immunization form, indicating you have received immunization against Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) and Meningococcal Meningitis. Finally, you must have been subjected to a tuberculosis screening within the last 12 months.
Important: We suggest that you apply at least 2 months in advance.
