UCLA Extension certificate programs give you the education and experience you need to get the job you want

UCLA Extension is a part of the UCLA Division of Continuing Education. With more than 40,000 participants per year, UCLA Extension is said to be the largest single-campus continuing education program in the world. UCLA Extension does not offer degree programs; however, it offers a wide variety of university-level, credit-bearing courses as well as many other courses and programs for students and professionals. Our student body includes nearly 3,000 international students and professionals per year.

Many professionals who have university degrees enroll in UCLA Extension courses and programs to update their knowledge in such fields as engineering, computer science, business and management, health sciences, and teacher education.

What is a Certificate Program?

Certificate programs, which some universities call "diploma programs", consist of a sequence of courses related to a specialized field or topic such as General Business Studies, Filmmaking, Marketing, Graphic Design, Project Management, Sustainability, and Journalism. Each program is designed to help you achieve a specific level of competency. Each program requires a minimum of 140 hours of coursework as mandated by the University of California system and meets guidelines developed by the Academic Senate of the University of California. Certificate programs are not degree programs; however, many Americans who have bachelor’s and master’s degrees enroll in certificate programs to advance or change their careers. A certificate program is a sequence of courses within a specialized field leading to the attainment of a specified set of competencies or learning objectives.

UCLA certificate programs are demanding and designed for native speakers of English. To succeed, international participants must be serious, mature, highly motivated, and able to manage their time effectively. You should be prepared to spend many hours outside of the classroom working on individual and group assignments

Why should I take a Certificate Program?

Students and professionals enroll in certificate programs for a variety of reasons. Many of our American participants are working professionals who want to stay up-to-date in their fields and move up to higher paying positions. Other professionals want to make a career change and explore a new field. International participants often choose certificate programs as a cost-effective alternative to U.S. master’s or doctoral degree programs. Some international students just want the experience of living in a world-class city like Los Angeles and studying at a prestigious university like UCLA.

Employers will be impressed that you have completed a program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), one of the top public universities in the U.S. As part of UCLA, UCLA Extension is the world’s largest single-campus provider of continuing professional education.

Throughout the world, many university programs focus on theory and do not give students an understanding of the day-to-day realities of particular fields. Since UCLA Extension certificate programs usually are taught by working professionals who are experts in their fields, programs offer a practical, real-world approach to each field of study. In addition, internships and Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the U.S. increase the chances of finding a job when you return home.

Main reasons to enroll:

  • Stay up-to-date and advance in your current career
  • Make a career change
  • Personal development
  • Explore a new field
  • Gain practical insights and experience
  • Experience Los Angeles and a major public university while pursuing a rigorous program
  • Formal acknowledgement through the receipt of a certificate
  • Choose a cost-effective alternative to a graduate degree
  • The pride of participating in a UCLA affiliated curriculum

How do employers perceive UCLA Extension’s certificates?

Employers worldwide are recognizing the importance of lifelong learning as the most valuable tool that individuals can use to keep current in their fields and ensure their ability to grow and face change successfully. To manage this career development, adults turn to leading continuing education programs, like UCLA Extension, as the source for updating their skills and managing change. Certificate programs are focused sequences of study in disciplines that individuals may select and that combine the important practical and theoretical knowledge necessary for these individuals to succeed in their desired fields.

Important information about Dates and Fees of the Certificate Programs

1.- International Student Fee: The "international student fee" of $1,700 is a mandatory fee for international students who applied to a full time certificate program. You must add the amount of the "international student fee" to the "Estimated Total Cost" of each program.

2.- Health Insurance: UCLA Extension requires all F1 students to carry adequate medical insurance. For your convenience, UCLA Extension offers a policy available for you to purchase through UCLA Extension. Rates for students, spouses, and children are shown on the application form instructions. An estimative is around $500 per quarter. For more details, contact a representative.

3.- Application Deadline: Students are recommended to apply 8 weeks before their program start date to guarantee space availability and to allow enough time to obtain an F-1 visa. Transfer student can apply 4 weeks before their program start. Estimated quarter dates and application deadline dates are shown below. You may begin any quarter unless otherwise indicated by your program.

Application Deadline Entry Quarter
November 1 Winter(January-March)
February 1 Spring(March-June)
May 1 Summer(June-September)
August 1 Fall(September-December)

4.- Eligibility: Application to most programs is open to international students, 18 or older, who have the equivalent of a U.S. high school education and the TOEFL or IELTS minimum.

5.- English Requirements: Eligibility for admission as an international student (F1 visa) requires submission of a minimum TOEFL or IELTS score. The minimum required internet-based TOEFL (iBT) score required for most programs is 83 and the minimum IELTS is 6.5. An iBT TOEFL score of 100 or IELTS score of 7 exempts you from further English-proficiency testing and course requirements. It your TOEFL is at least 83 but less than 100, or your IELTS at least 6.5 but under 7, you are required to take the English as a Second Language Placement Exam (ESLPE) before the start of your program. We will send information on the date and how to register for the ESLPE along with your I-20 documents. Depending on your score on the ESLPE, you may have to enroll in one or two English as a second language (ESL) courses in addition to your certificate program courses. The ESL requirement must be fulfilled during your first quarter in the program. The ESL courses count toward your 12-unit-per-quarter minimum course requirement

6.- Academic Status Requirements: You must enroll in 12 units of credit (letter grade) courses that count toward your certificate program every quarter and get at least a "C" grade in every course. This means you may have to take courses in your program that are not your preferred choices. You must complete your program by the end date on your I-20.

7.- Class Hours and Location: Courses are mainly Monday through Thursday evenings with some on weekends. Most courses are on the UCLA campus, in Westwood Village. Some are at other locations in Los Angeles.

8.- OPT Practical Training (post-completion): The maximum 12-month practical training allows F1 international students to work in the U.S. in a job directly related to their field of study. To be eligible to apply, you must complete a UCLA Extension certificate program and have held F1 academic status for at least one academic year (nine months).

9.- Payment of courses: In most cases, you can pay your course fees quarter by- quarter at the beginning of each quarter. Individual fees vary, but range between $600 and $1,500; however, some fees are higher. You should estimate that you will spend between $1,800 and $3,000 per quarter depending on the estimated cost of your program.

10.- Early Enrollment Discount: UCLA Extension offers reduced fees on most courses if you enroll in courses more than 30 days in advance of the course start-date. For example, if a course begins on October 1, and if you enroll before September 1, you may be eligible for an early enrollment discount. If your enrollment in a certificate program has been confirmed more than a month before the quarter start date, and if you want to enroll in your courses online before you depart for Los Angeles, you may do so. However, it is often advisable to contact the certificate program advisor of your program to determine whether or not you are selecting appropriate courses for your first quarter. Most participants begin their programs by enrolling first in required courses.

11.- Refund Policy: The international student fee is refundable, minus $500, if your visa is denied or if you do not enter the U.S. There are no refunds if you enter the U.S. using UCLA Extension’s I-20. Refund requests must be received in writing at the International Student Office (ISO) before the first day of the entry quarter on your I-20. The health insurance fee is also refundable. The $40 express mail fee is not refundable if used when sending the I-20 to you.

12.- Dates and fees are subject to change.

I want to study English first at UCLA Extension and then to enroll in a Certificate Program as soon as I have the TOEFL Score. Do I need to leave the US?, Do I need a new visa?

You do not need to leave the US, and the student visa F-1 can be used for the certificate program as well. The international student office will do the SEVIS transfer, from the English Program to the Certificate Program internally.

What is the total cost of the Certificate program including tuition, international student fees, housing, meals, transportation, entertainment, etc?

When you apply, you must pay the following fees in advance (around $2,500):

  • International Student Fee
  • Program Candidacy Fee
  • Insurance Fee(s) for your first quarter for yourself and for any dependents who will accompany you
  • Express Mail Fee

*You must add these fees to the Estimated Total Cost of the Certificate Program mentioned in the table. International Students should add around $3,200 for a certificate program of 3 quarters (international student fee of $1,700 plus $1,500 of health insurance for 9 months.

Then you have to pay your course fees quarter by- quarter at the beginning of each quarter. You should estimate that you will spend between $1,800 and $3,000 per quarter depending on the estimated cost of your program.

For example the certificate in marketing has an estimation cost of $8,100. International students should consider to pay around $11,300 for this program.

UCLA Extension has an estimation of personal expenses during the program: The total estimated cost per year is $26,300. School expenses per quarter (12 weeks) cost are estimated to be between $1,700-$3,000. The actual amount you spend will depend on your program and the courses you enroll in. Living expenses are estimated at $5,000 per quarter. You will need to show that you or your sponsor have access to this amount of money when you apply. This is an estimated expense that is used for immigration (I-20) purposes. Flight tickets and visa processing fees are not including in this estimation.

Testimony from Oriol B. - Spain | "I’d highlight the quality and experience of the professors"

Testimony UCLA Extension Marketing student from Spain

"The overall experience at UCLA Extension was simply amazing. Starting from the point that you’re studying in one of the top ranked universities in the world, along with its beautiful campus, and the fact that it’s located in one of the most incredible and exciting cities on the planet, has really made enrolling at UCLA Extension one of the best decisions in my life.

I took the Certificate Program in Marketing. After studying Engineering in Spain and Sweden, I wanted to give a turn-around to my educational background and study something more creative like Marketing.

It’s great the way the Certificate Program is organized. It allowed me (without having studied Marketing before) to start it by taking some introductory classes, while ending it by taking very advanced classes in which I could bring on everything I learned on previous courses, along with my inner creativity and ideas.

I found especially useful the fact that an important part of every course was a big project presentation in front of the class. That doesn’t only allow foreign students (or non-native speakers) to brush up on their English skills faster, but it’s also a great way to improve your public speaking skills. Because let’s face it, speaking in public will probably be a constant situation in the professional world.

I’d highlight the quality and experience of the professors. They aren’t just Marketing instructors, but truly experienced professionals in the field (CEO, Presidents, Founders, etc…), which provides the student with great insights from real world cases in big corporations. I’d also like to point out how enthusiastic and helpful they were, fact that kept me engaged with each course from the very beginning.

Having classmates from all over the world it’s truly an amazing learning experience. In class, you learn to communicate and discuss very different topics with people with different points of view from yours. During group projects, the fact that most members are from different places with different backgrounds requires a lot of communication in order to reach the project goals. That really prepares the student for similar situations that can happen in the professional world. And not to mention the fact that now I have friends all over the world!"
