How to apply to an English Language Program at the American Language Center of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA Extension)

Complete the Application Form

Requirements:

  1. Be at least 18 years old
  2. Have available funds to pay all program fees.

You must send us the following documents to apply:

  1. Application form
  2. A copy of a valid Passport (information page)
  3. A Financial Certification: bank letter or bank statement that shows that you or your sponsor have at least the "Student's Education & Living Expenses" of the program. Please check on the following table the minimum amount to show in the financial document. The document must be dated within the last 60 days. If financial documents are NOT in the student’s name, you must also submit a Letter of Sponsorship. Check the instructions for more details.

The University will send you the admission documents

It takes around 2 to 3 weeks for the University to send you the admission documents.

The documents will be sent by certified mail. Please write clearly your mailing address in the application form.

Student Visa F-1

International Students need to apply to student visa F-1 in order to take any full time program

The University will review your application, and will send you by certified mail the document form "I-20" where you can find your SEVIS number. You will need this form in order to apply to the student visa at the US embassy in your country. After you send all the documents, a representative will contact you to give you more details about this process.

Complete the Application Form

Requirements:

  1. Be at least 18 years old
  2. Hold a high school diploma
  3. Have available funds to pay all program fees.
  4. Have minimum English requirement. Eligibility for admission as an international student (F1 visa) requires submission of a minimum TOEFL or IELTS score. The minimum required internet-based TOEFL (iBT) score required for most programs is 83 and the minimum IELTS is 6.5.

You must send us the following documents:

  1. A copy of a valid Passport (information page)
  2. A Financial Certification: The Financial Certification could be a bank statement or bank letter that shows that the sponsor has more than $26,300 dollars per year (plus amounts for dependents if applicable). The document must be dated within the last 90 days. If accompanied by your family, add U.S. $7,600 for your spouse and $5,000 for each dependent child. If financial documents are NOT in the student’s name, you must also submit a Letter of Sponsorship. Check the instructions for more details.
  3. TOEFL or IELTS score (The minimum required internet-based TOEFL (iBT) score required for most programs is 83 and the minimum IELTS is 6.5.)
  4. Official copy of high school or college transcripts. (English copy must be included with foreign language transcripts)
  5. One passport-size photo of your self
  6. Payment confirmation of the initial fees. International students must pay the following initial payments:
    • Certificate Candidacy Fee (it depends on the program approx. $200)
    • International Academic Services: $2,000
    • First Quarter Student Health Insurance: $500 (approx.)
    • Express Mail Service: $40
    *You will receive the payment instructions after you send us all the documents.

Complete the Application Form

Requirements:

  1. Be at least 18 years old before the start date of the course you wish to attend.
  2. Be pursuing a degree in your home university and have completed at least one or two years of your program.
  3. Have a minimum grade point average (GPA) equivalent to a 3.0 on a four-point (4) scale. Contact us for GPA conversion tables for the grading system in your country.
  4. Submit an official Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL-iBT) score of 100 or higher or an Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7 or higher; scores must have been achieved within less than 24 months of your application date.

You must send us the following documents:

  1. A copy of a valid Passport (information page)
  2. Study Plan: The key to the enrollment process is being flexible and having a well-developed list of courses. To ensure that Study Abroad at UCLA is a good match with your educational objectives, you are required to submit a Proposed Study Plan, listing a minimum of 10 specific UCLA and/or UCLA Extension courses. These courses need to be approved for transfer credit by the academic advisor of your home university before you arrive for the Study Abroad at UCLA program
  3. TOEFL or IELTS Score: Submit an official Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL-iBT) score of 91 or higher (Students admitted with a TOEFL score between 91 – 99 are required to enroll in ESL X 433 C. ESL X 433 C is a credit bearing English class designed to refine student’s ability to function students succeed in an academic environment.) or an Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7 or higher; scores must have been achieved within less than 24 months of your application date. * Students are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS score if: 1) they are a native speaker of English from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, or the United Kingdom, 2) they declare that English is their second language and they provide a transcript showing completion of at least 4 years of instruction from a high school, university, or college in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, or the United Kingdom, or 3) they are transferring from the American Language Center UCLA Extension with a grade of “A-” or higher from level 107 of the Academic Intensive English Language Program.
  4. A Financial Certification: The Financial Certification could be a bank statement or bank letter that shows that the sponsor has more than $15,390 dollars per quarter (plus amounts for dependents if applicable). The document must be dated within the last 90 days. If accompanied by your family, add U.S. $1,927 for your spouse and $1,267 for each dependent child. If financial documents are NOT in the student’s name, you must also submit a Letter of Sponsorship. Check the instructions for more details.
