Students at the beginner to high-intermediate levels initially focus on General English before progressing to more sophisticated courses. By employing the Cambridge Communicative Approach, learners enhance all four language competencies, which include speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Each level has a duration of 4 weeks. Students can take as many weeks as they need.

Elective classes can include: Speaking, Writing, FCE Exam Practice, Listening, Idioms in English, CAE Exam Practice, Grammar, Debate, CPE Exam Practice, Pronunciation, Business English, Vocabulary, Academic Vocabulary, IELTS Preparation, Reading, Academic Reading and Academic Skills

Placement test: Before beginning, students take a placement test to establish their English proficiency level. Those who score at Level 10 or higher may directly enroll in Cambridge Preparation courses. Meanwhile, students with a score of Level 9 or lower will commence with the General English program.

The University Pathway Programs are divided in 3 according to English language proficiency: University Pathway I (levels 10-11), University Pathway II Certificate (12-13), and University Pathway III Certificate (levels 14-17).

GAP YEAR ACADEMIC PROGRAM

This program combines the ILAC University Pathway Program with a Canadian College or University’s Program, thus you spend a semester studying English at ILAC and then a second semester studying a program of your choice at one of the partner institutions, which can go from environmental science to photography or interior design. Please note that for this program a level of at least intermediate English is necessary. However, you can take additional English classes prior to the Gap Year Program.

YOUNG ADULT ENGLISH PROGRAMS (15-18 Years Old)

These programs are design for young students who are looking to improve their English language proficiency, while meeting new people and exploring exciting new destinations. Students can choose between General English Program, University Pathway and the Summer or Winter Platinum Packages.

GENERAL ENGLISH

This general English program is for students who are have a relative grasp of the English language, but have not achieve a higher level of proficiency yet, thus is for students placed between levels 1 and 8, who can later choose another principal course to focus on, once they have achieved level 9. Level 9 students can either sign up for the General English course or chose one of the other principal courses. Using the Cambridge Communicative Method, students will develop all 4 language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) before moving into a specialized program of a higher level, such as Cambridge English, TOEFL or IELTS Preparation, Business English and University Pathway Programs.

What is ILAC?

The International Language Academy of Canada is an English institute established in 1997 by Jonathan Kolber and Ilan Cohen, and it’s currently located in two different cities: Vancouver and Toronto. It has a wide variety of English programs, from intensive English to university pathway programs, so students come from all over the world to study at this highly-awarded English institute.

Is there a minimum age to apply for an English program at ILAC?

Students need to be at least 19 years old at the beginning of the program they wish to enroll on. There are also special programs for teenagers aged between 15 and 18 years old, with activities and curricula tailored for their needs and goals.

Is there any deadline to apply?

There's no deadline, as programs start every Monday, but ILAC recommends applying at least 15 to 75 days in advance, as per visa requirements for each student.

How is my English proficiency level tested?

There's a referential online test to check your level beforehand, but you’ll take a placement test on your first day at ILAC.

Do I need to submit an English test score or a transcript when applying to these ESL programs?

No, there’s no need to submit a test score or a transcript when you apply for an English program at ILAC, since your English fluency will be assessed with a placement test. Students placed at level 9 or lower will be enrolled on the General English program, and students who place at level 10 or higher may enroll on a more advanced program.

Do I receive any certificate by the end of the program?

Yes, you’ll receive a certificate if you complete your program.

I am not a student in my home country. Can I enroll on these English language programs with a student visa?

Yes, you don’t need to be a student currently to apply for an English program at ILAC. The only requirement you need to meet is the minimum age, as well as the minimum level of English requirement in case you apply for an advanced program.

Can I enroll on these ESL programs with a tourist visa or a visa waiver eTA?

Yes, you can enroll with a tourist visa or visa waiver eTA. However, if you plan to study for more than six months, you’ll need to apply for a study permit.

What are ILAC’s English language levels?

There are 17 English levels in ILAC, divided in 9 groups: Intro (1), Beginner (2-3), Pre-Intermediate (4-5), Intermediate (6-7), High-Intermediate (8-9), Pre-Advanced (10-11), Advanced (12-13), High-Advanced (14-15), and Proficiency (16-17). For weeks of study are considered for each English level.

How many students are in each class?

18 students maximum.

What is the school’s schedule? How many hours per week?

Each lesson lasts 45 minutes. Classes are typically from 8:30am to 1:30pm, and power English courses are from 1:50pm to 3:20pm. Courses have usually 26 core lessons + 4 elective course lessons. Power English customization adds 8 more lessons, from Monday to Thursday.

What kind of accommodations are available?

Homestays and private student residences you can book through ILAC. You can also make your own accommodation arrangements.

Can I use the school facilities?

Yes, ILAC’s facilities and services are open for all students enrolled on English programs.

Are there any extracurricular activities?

Yes, as ILAC offers both free and paid extracurricular activities for all students.

Do I need to buy health insurance?

ILAC offers optional health insurance. We recommend obtaining health insurance, as Canada doesn’t offer health coverage for international students, unless they study for a minimum amount of time that varies according to each province.

Do I need to buy any books?

Yes, since books are not included. Each book costs about $60 CAD per 2 months, and each one comprises two levels of English. Programs for teenagers include a set of books within the fees.

Is there an application fee for these English programs?

Yes, there’s a $160 CAD application fee that can be paid by credit card and Flywire.

When do I pay? What are the payment methods for these ESL programs?

You can pay after paying the application fee and after the acceptance letter has been sent, but with at least a month in advance. You can pay by credit card or through Flywire.

Are there any scholarships for ILAC’s English programs?

No, there aren’t any scholarships to study at ILAC. Nonetheless, some special discounts may apply for students. Contact us for further information.
