Mount Maunganui, a beach town under an extinct volcano
Mount Maunganui is a town of about 21,000 people on a sandspit in the Bay of Plenty. The ocean is on one side and a sheltered harbour on the other. At the end of the peninsula rises Mauao, the lava dome everyone calls The Mount. It is 230 metres high and a taonga, a treasure, of Tauranga Moana. The main beach runs for kilometres and is one of the best known surf beaches in the country.
Day to day, it is just as easy to love. Tauranga is across the harbour bridge, so your small town comes with a real city attached. A bus ride costs NZ$1.60 with a student card, parking is free almost everywhere, and lunch is NZ$5 to NZ$15. You walk or cycle to class, spend your afternoons in the water, and enjoy one of the sunniest corners of New Zealand.
What English courses does Mount Maunganui Language Centre offer?
MMLC runs 8 programmes from one school. Every one starts on your first morning with a grammar test, a writing test and an interview. Full time runs 9.00 to 3.00 Monday to Thursday, and 9.00 to 12.00 on Friday. Part time is mornings, Monday to Friday. Classes average 8 students.
It is the course most students choose, at 4 levels from elementary to upper intermediate. You work on grammar and vocabulary, conversation and pronunciation, and listening and speaking. Fluency practice then turns all of that into English you can use in a shop. On your first morning you are tested, interviewed and placed. Your teacher checks your level again in that first class. Book 2 weeks or a full year, full time or mornings only. Complete beginners usually start with one to one lessons, then join a group.
This is the exam course MMLC is best known for. It runs twice a year: a 9 to 10-week course from January and a 12-week course from September. According to the school, students who finish the 12-week course consistently place in the top 10% of candidates in New Zealand. You start with a pre-test. A Cambridge certificate never expires, so it is a great choice if you want English for your career.
For the score a university, an employer or an immigration officer asks you for. MMLC prepares you for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. It is also a TOEIC test centre, which is handy if your employer at home asks for TOEIC. Exam Prep Plus starts any Monday and runs as long as you need, so it fits before or after General English. Your pre-test shows where you are. If you need more time, MMLC recommends 12 weeks of General English first.
Your route into study in New Zealand, at a high school, a polytechnic or a university. You work on academic English across listening, reading, academic writing and speaking, and you track your progress on the IELTS scale. You also learn how a New Zealand classroom works, so you start your next course feeling at home. MMLC has pathway agreements with universities, polytechnics and schools, and works directly with the one you are aiming for. Plan on 12 weeks at least; most students take 24.
English in the morning and the beach in the afternoon, 5 minutes from your classroom. You learn to paddle, stand up and read a wave, plus surf etiquette and ocean safety. Boards and wetsuits are included. You book lessons as you go, so you only pay for the days you surf. Any level of English is welcome, and so is anyone who has never surfed. It runs 1 to 4 weeks, and November to April brings the best conditions.
Three hours of English each morning and golf in the afternoon, with professional coaching. You play two 18-hole courses 5 minutes from the school, and there is a driving range too. Sessions cover hitting, chipping, putting, rules and etiquette. On the course you learn to play out of bunkers and from uphill and downhill lies. If you stay long enough, you can join a club at a reasonable rate. It runs 1 to 4 weeks, at any level of English.
For you if you want to see the whole Bay of Plenty. Mornings are General English. Afternoons rotate through bush and beach walks, orchards and wineries, horse riding, canoeing, cooking classes, a Māori language lesson and a trip to Hobbiton. Two activities a week are free, and there are weekend trips on top. It runs 1 to 4 weeks, from elementary to upper intermediate.
4 weeks of full time General English, for you if you arrive on a working holiday visa or a student visa that lets you work part time. On top of your classes there are 4 one-hour sessions on how work in New Zealand runs. They cover tax, the minimum wage, where jobs are advertised and what to expect in an interview. MMLC also writes you a professional CV in English at no extra cost and helps you search. You need an intermediate level, the level employers look for on your first shift.
Most students start with General English, and many come to this coast for the courses that pair it with surfing, golf or the Bay

What should you know before applying to Mount Maunganui Language Centre?
The questions our advisors hear every week before someone books. We took the answers from the school’s own material.
Costs, Dates, Application Process and other Considerations
Application Process - Send us the contact form and an advisor gets back to you with the steps for your country: the documents you need, how long each stage takes and how the New Zealand student visa works. For the exam courses you take a pre-test. It shows MMLC whether you are ready for the exam you want, or whether General English first will get you there faster. We prepare and send the application for you.
Dates of the Program - General English and most other courses start every Monday of the year, so you pick your week. The Cambridge courses run twice a year: a 9 to 10-week course from January and a 12-week course from September. The surf, golf and activity courses run alongside General English, so they start whenever you do. Tell us your month and we will confirm the next start date with places left.
Length of the Program - General English runs from 2 weeks to a full year. The activity courses are 1 to 4 weeks, and the working holiday course is 4 weeks. Cambridge takes 9 to 12 weeks, depending on the intake. Academic preparation takes 12 weeks at least, and most students take 24. Full time is 9.00 to 3.00 Monday to Thursday, and 9.00 to 12.00 on Friday. Part time is 9.00 to 12.00, Monday to Friday.
Costs - The total depends on the course, the number of weeks and when you travel. Send us the form at the end of this page and we send you a full quote before you pay anything. It covers tuition, enrolment, accommodation and this month’s promotion. Add two things to your budget early. One is the airport transfer from Auckland, which MMLC runs privately, and we add it to your quote. The other is the exam fee, paid separately from the preparation course. Day to day, lunch is NZ$5 to NZ$15 and a bus ride is NZ$1.60 with a student card. For a rough figure tonight, our cost of studying abroad calculator adds living costs to the tuition.
Health Insurance - New Zealand requires you, as an international student, to have medical and travel insurance for your whole enrolment. If you do not have a policy that qualifies, MMLC arranges cover through Uni Care. The Accident Compensation Corporation covers accidents for everyone in the country, visitors included. Your insurance covers the rest, like illness or a trip to the dentist. We arrange it with your enrolment, so your cover starts the day you land.
Minimum Age - General English is an adult course, and most students are 18 or over. Younger students usually come on the academic preparation route, which gets them ready for a New Zealand school. Mount Maunganui College is MMLC’s preferred partner, and other schools can be arranged on request. Tell us your son or daughter’s age from the start. We will confirm what MMLC can offer and which accommodation fits someone under 18.
Minimum English Level - General English runs from elementary to upper intermediate. If you are a complete beginner, you start with one to one lessons and then join a group. Everyone sits a grammar test, a writing test and an interview on the first morning. The exam and academic courses have a pre-test. If you need more time, MMLC recommends 12 weeks of General English first.
Visa Regulations - It depends on how long you stay. For courses of up to three months you can usually come as a visitor. If you are from one of the many countries that qualify, you only need an NZeTA to board, not a visa. For longer courses you need a student visa. A working holiday visa is another route, with its own age and nationality rules, and we check them for you before you book. We prepare and lodge the application, and our team does any translations at no extra cost.
Working While You Study: - Yes, in most cases. If you study full time for 14 weeks or more at a Category 1 school like MMLC, you can work up to 25 hours a week. Before you book your flight, we check with you what your visa allows. MMLC runs a 4-week course to help you land your first job, with sessions on tax, wages and interviews, and a CV in English. And the Bay of Plenty has plenty of work in horticulture, packhouses, cafés and hotels.
Accommodation - You have two options. A homestay places you with a local family chosen with your interests in mind, and the staff who place you visit the home. It can be walking distance from the school or a short bike or bus ride away. The student apartment near the school gives you a private room with a shared kitchen, bathroom and living area, and suits you if you like to cook for yourself. Fees for both are protected by a bank bond with Westpac. Ask us for a quote and we will price both for your dates.
Extra Curricular Activities - The activities are a big part of why MMLC is on this coast. Two a week are free, and there are weekend trips on top. You can try bush and beach walks, orchards and wineries, horse riding, canoeing, cooking classes and a Māori language lesson, and Hobbiton is about an hour’s drive away. Surfing and golf have courses of their own, with boards, wetsuits and coaching included. Further afield, the Waitomo Caves are a day trip and the ski fields are about three hours away.
Airport Pickup - Auckland International Airport is two and a half hours from Mount Maunganui, so plan your arrival ahead. You have three options. A budget bus takes about 5 hours. A 40-minute domestic flight takes you to Tauranga. Or MMLC’s private transfer takes you straight there, and that is the one we recommend for your first arrival. Book it with your accommodation, and someone will be waiting for you.
First day of classes - Your first day starts with orientation: a grammar test, a writing test and an interview. Then you get a briefing on the school, your homestay, transport and the town, and you join a class that same morning. Bring your passport and your insurance details. Your teacher checks your level in that first lesson and moves you if needed. So by the end of your first Monday, you are in the right class.
Keep in mind that the biggest cost is usually not the course itself, but living costs. So before you choose the cheapest school, look at the whole picture

About Mount Maunganui
Mount Maunganui is a town of about 21,000 people, built along a sandspit in the Bay of Plenty. The open Pacific is on one side and a sheltered harbour on the other. At the tip stands Mauao, a lava dome 2 to 3 million years old that everyone calls The Mount. The track to the top takes about an hour, and the view runs the length of the beach. That beach is one of the best known surf breaks in New Zealand, and the town grew up around it. A block behind it is a main street of cafés, surf shops and restaurants. Tauranga is across the harbour bridge, which has linked the two since 1988. So your beach town comes with a city attached: a port, a university campus, festivals and everything else a city brings. For a student, it is a very easy place to live. Buses cost NZ$1.60 a trip with a student card, parking is free almost everywhere, and lunch is NZ$5 to NZ$15. And the ocean is a 5-minute walk from your classroom.
Weather in Mount Maunganui
The Bay of Plenty lives up to its name. It is one of the sunniest and warmest corners of New Zealand, which is why the kiwifruit grows here and the beach fills up from December. Summer, December to February, is warm and long. The sea stays good for swimming well into March, and the surf courses are at their best from November to April. Autumn is settled and calm, and the harvest runs right through it. Winter, June to August, is cool and mild, a lot like a European autumn. And the ski fields are about three hours inland if you want snow. Spring brings wind and sudden bright days. Here you will wear a wetsuit more often than a heavy coat.
