Why do students choose Nelson English Centre in 2026?

Over 30 years in a small, sunny city of 50,000 people, where English is part of your whole day. Here is what makes it special.

23 hours a week, and NEC shows you where every hour goes

Full time at NEC is 23 hours a week, and the school shows you exactly where the time goes. You get 20.75 hours in the classroom. You get up to 75 minutes of written feedback on the diary you keep. And there are question and answer sessions at the end of the morning and afternoon classes. Add the free activity after school every day, and you get about 27 hours of English a week.

A city where English is the language of every day

Nelson has around 50,000 people, and most of the people you meet are locals. So you speak English at the supermarket, in your homestay and at the beach, not only in class. Inside the school there is a strict English-only rule. Break it and you pay a NZ$1 fine, which goes to the Nelson SPCA. Students often say this rule is what got them speaking.

14 students maximum, 12 for Cambridge

NEC has 12 classrooms and about 110 students, so there are roughly 7.5 students per teacher. Classes have 14 students at most, and 12 in the Cambridge courses. Every teacher holds at least a Cambridge CELTA or a Trinity CertTESOL. You sit a placement test on day one, and the Director of Studies interviews you in your first week. You move up a level roughly every 8 to 16 weeks.

The IELTS test happens in the building

NEC runs the official IELTS test once a month. It is the only test venue in the upper South Island. So you prepare and sit the exam in the same rooms. The school estimates about 24 weeks of full-time study to move up a whole band, so you can plan your dates with a clear target.

Three national parks, and camping gear on loan

Abel Tasman is an hour away, Nelson Lakes an hour and a half, and Golden Bay two to three hours. NEC runs its own trips. It also lends you camping and sports gear for free, with route notes if you want to plan your own weekend. Afternoons bring crochet, boxing, basketball, watercolour painting, games night, ukulele and barbecues. And on Friday there is a graduation ceremony, where the students who are leaving give a speech.

Family owned, and top rated by the NZQA

NEC is an independent, family-owned school. The NZQA rates it Category 1, and it rated the school highly confident at its external evaluation and review. According to the school, its NZQA and IALC audits have been exemplary, with no major issues. And your tuition is held by Public Trust, so your fees are protected.

Nelson English Centre has taught English in Nelson since 1995. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority rates it Category 1, the highest of the four bands NZQA gives providers. It also rated the school highly confident at its external evaluation and review. NEC is a member of IALC, the International Association of Language Centres, and according to the school it is one of only two IALC schools in New Zealand. It is also an approved English language provider for the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission.

Nelson, the sunniest city in New Zealand

Nelson sits at the top of the South Island, surrounded by three national parks: Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes. It gets more sunshine than anywhere else in the country. It is one of New Zealand’s oldest cities and one of its smallest. So you get a centre you can walk across, a market every Saturday, and a beach at the end of the bus route.

For you as a student, Nelson means immersion and a budget that goes further. Living costs are affordable, and most students walk or cycle to class, so you save on transport. You are surrounded by locals, so you speak English all day, not only in class. And the airport is an hour from both Auckland and Christchurch, so getting here is a short hop.

What English courses does Nelson English Centre offer?

You choose from 6 programmes, and every one starts with a placement test on your first morning. Classes have 14 students at most. Full time is 23 hours a week and part time is 15. Mornings are for grammar and vocabulary, and afternoons for speaking and listening.

General English

This is the course most students book. It is open at every level, from beginner to advanced, and to anyone aged 14 or over. Mornings, from 9.00 to 12.15, cover grammar and vocabulary across reading, writing, speaking and listening. Afternoons, from 1.15 to 3.15, are all about making you fluent. You move up a level roughly every 8 to 16 weeks. And you leave with a report on what you can now do in English. Book 1 week or stay 50, full time at 23 hours or part time at 15.

All levels, ages 14 and overStarts every Monday1 to 50 weeks
IELTS Preparation

This is for the band score your university, employer or immigration case officer is waiting on. And the exam itself is in the building. Mornings combine grammar with reading and writing technique. Afternoons build your vocabulary and practise speaking and listening. NEC runs the official IELTS test once a month, as the only venue in the upper South Island. The school estimates about 24 weeks of full-time study to move up a whole band, so plan your dates around that.

Entry test requiredStarts every MondayFrom 4 weeks
Cambridge First and Advanced

A Cambridge certificate never expires, and that is why many students choose it. Mornings cover reading, writing and use of English. Afternoons cover the speaking and listening papers. You get homework every day, which keeps you exam ready. Classes have 12 students at most. The course runs for 9 or 12 weeks, twice a year, and the price includes the textbook and the exam entry. There is an entry test, so you start the course with a real chance of passing.

Maximum 12 studentsTwo intakes a year9 or 12 weeks
Specialised English with private tutoring

This is for the English of one particular job or goal. You follow the full-time General English or IELTS timetable. Then you add 2 hours a week of one to one tutoring in your field: business, aviation, OET for health professionals, academic English, or preparation for a New Zealand high school. In the tutoring you work on the vocabulary and the situations you will really face, with a teacher who knows your goals.

Full time plus 2 tutoring hoursStarts every MondayAs long as you need
English plus an activity

Class in the morning, and the reason you chose Nelson in the afternoon. NEC combines General English with mountain biking, golf, rugby or volunteering. There is also a family option, where parents and children study at the same time. The trails, the golf courses and the coast are all close by, so it fits easily into your week. And you keep speaking English while you are out there, which is what makes it work.

50+ English and Activities

A course for students of 50 and over, taught only with others in that age group, with 8 students at most in a class. Lessons run from 9.00 to 12.15 and focus on conversation. Afternoons, from 1.15 to 3.15, take you out to wineries, kayaking, mountain biking, heritage sites and coastal walks, and you join in as much as you like. It runs on set dates, for 1 to 4 weeks. The price covers your homestay, airport transfers and weekend activities as well as the course.

What should you know before applying to Nelson English Centre?

The things worth sorting out before you book. We took the answers from the school’s own student handbook and from what our advisors get asked every week.

Costs, Dates, Application Process and other Considerations

Application Process - Start by writing to us through the contact form. An advisor gets back to you with the steps for your country: the documents you need, how long each stage takes and how the New Zealand student visa application works. NEC asks for a copy of your passport and your insurance certificate. If you are not sure of your level, the school sends you a pre-test you can sit at home. The Cambridge and IELTS courses also have an entry test. We prepare your application and send it for you.

Dates of the Program - General English, IELTS and the specialised courses start every Monday of the year. Cambridge First and Advanced run twice a year, in 9 and 12 week blocks. The 50+ course runs on set dates, so ask us for the next ones. The school closes on New Zealand public holidays, and those weeks are charged as normal. Tell us your month, and we confirm the next start date with space for you.

Length of the Program - From 1 week to 50. NEC accepts bookings of any length and recommends up to 52 weeks. It also suggests a maximum by level, so every week keeps moving you forward: 50 weeks from elementary, 40 from pre-intermediate, 25 from intermediate and 20 above that. IELTS is 4 weeks minimum, Cambridge is 9 or 12 weeks, and the 50+ course runs 1 to 4 weeks.

Costs - The total depends on the course, the number of weeks and the time of year. Fill in the form at the bottom of this page and we send you a full quote before you pay anything. It covers tuition, the enrolment fee, accommodation and this month’s promotion. Plan for living costs too: NEC suggests about NZ$1,625 a month to live in Nelson. The Cambridge courses include the textbook and the exam entry, and for IELTS the exam is paid separately. For a rough figure tonight, our cost of studying abroad calculator adds living costs to the course.

Health Insurance - New Zealand law requires every international student to have medical and travel insurance for the whole enrolment, and NEC copies your certificate on your first day. Your policy covers travel to and from New Zealand, medical care including surgery and hospital, repatriation, and travel for your family if something serious happens. The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) covers accidents for anyone in the country, visitors included. Your insurance takes care of everything else. It is worth adding cover for lost deposits too, so your payments to the school are protected.

Minimum Age - NEC welcomes students from 14. If your son or daughter is under 18, they stay in accommodation the school arranges and safety checks, which in practice means a homestay. The school stays in touch with parents and visits the house. At the other end, the 50+ course is taught only with students in that age group.

Minimum English Level - For General English you need no English at all. Complete beginners are welcome, and a test on the first morning places you in the right class. For IELTS and Cambridge you need to pass an entry test. The Director of Studies tells you honestly whether 12 weeks gives you a real chance at the exam you want. If you are not sure of your level, NEC sends you a pre-test to sit before you book.

Visa Regulations - Courses of up to three months are usually done as a visitor. If you are from one of the many countries that qualify, you only need an NZeTA to board, not a visa. For longer courses you need a student visa. NEC checks your visa conditions with Immigration New Zealand’s Visa View system and reports any breach, as the rules require. Keep your attendance at 80% or more and your visa stays in good standing. We prepare and file the application, and our team does the translations at no extra cost.

Working While You Study: - Yes, in most cases. If you study full time for 14 weeks or more at a Category 1 school like Nelson English Centre, you can work up to 25 hours a week. Before you book your flight, we check with you what your visa allows. The minimum wage is set nationally and reviewed every April, so your hours pay well. And NEC staff help you with the practical side of finding work, and support you with your employer whenever you need it.

Accommodation - Most students choose a homestay, and NEC places you within walking or cycling distance of the school. So you get to class on foot or by bike. You get your own furnished room with a desk and internet. Breakfast and dinner are included from Monday to Friday, and three meals a day at the weekend. The homestay coordinator inspects every house, visits when you arrive, and can move you to another family if needed. You can also choose a backpacker room, a studio or a share flat, and the school will point you to them. Ask us for a quote and we will price the options for your dates.

Extra Curricular Activities - A full programme, and most of it free. There is something on after school every day: crochet, boxing, basketball, watercolour painting, games night, ukulele, football, volleyball and barbecues. At weekends you head out to Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes, Golden Bay and Waikoropupū Springs. Further afield there is whale watching at Kaikōura and the West Coast. Paid extras include skydiving, sailing and canyoning. The school lends you camping and sports gear for free, and writes you an itinerary if you want to explore on your own.

Airport Pickup - NEC arranges your airport transfer, and it is a good idea on your first arrival, even though Nelson Airport is close to town. Flights from Auckland and Christchurch take about an hour, and you usually have a connection on the way. So you land, someone meets you, and you sort out the rest the next day. Book it with your accommodation, so the two are coordinated.

First day of classes - Day one is orientation. You get a welcome from the front desk, the placement test and an explanation of the English-only rule. Then a tour of the school, and the fire and earthquake procedures every school in New Zealand goes through. Bring your passport and your insurance certificate, because the school copies both. In your first week, the Director of Studies interviews you to check your class is right and the school is everything you expected.

Keep in mind that you will get detailed information about your English programme at Nelson English Centre once your enrolment is complete.

A school in the middle of Nelson

NEC is at 41 Selwyn Place, a few minutes from the post office, the banks, the cafés and the bus station. It has 12 classrooms and a self-study area, with laptops you can borrow from the front desk. There is a student kitchen and a large student lounge, where the English-only rule still applies. And there is full wheelchair access to the classrooms, kitchen and toilets.

About Nelson

Nelson is a city of about 50,000 people at the top of the South Island. It is the sunniest place in New Zealand, and locals will tell you so straight away. It is also one of the country’s oldest cities. You get a Saturday market, a cathedral at the top of the main street, galleries, and a food and wine scene that is big for a city this size. Three national parks surround it. Abel Tasman, an hour away, has golden beaches and the coast track. Kahurangi sits just behind the city, and Nelson Lakes is an hour and a half inland. The geographical centre of New Zealand is a 20-minute walk from the school, up a hill with a view over the harbour. Day to day, you can cross the city by bike, the beach is on a bus route, and the people you speak English with all day are locals.

Weather in Nelson

Nelson has a Mediterranean climate, with more sunshine hours than anywhere else in New Zealand and mild weather all year. Summer, December to February, sits at around 23 degrees, and it is the season for beaches and national parks. Autumn, March to May, is settled and clear, and it is harvest time in the region. Winter, June to August, drops to 3 to 5 degrees overnight but stays bright by day. NEC says it has the best winter climate in the country, and the ski fields are a couple of hours away. Spring, September to November, is changeable and green. Our tip: a light jacket and a raincoat cover you all year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask our advisors before booking a course at Nelson English Centre: entry, levels, visas, work rights, what your 23 hours a week include, and what life in a small New Zealand city is like.

Do I need a visa to study at Nelson English Centre?

It depends on how long you stay. For three months or less you can usually come as a visitor, and people from many countries only need an NZeTA to board, not a visa. For longer stays you need a student visa. NEC checks your visa conditions through Immigration New Zealand’s Visa View system, and it reports attendance as the rules require. So come to class regularly and your visa stays in good standing. We prepare and file the application that fits you, and our team does any translations at no extra cost.

How much does Nelson English Centre cost?

It depends on the course, the number of weeks and the time of year. Send us the contact form and we send you a full written quote: tuition, the enrolment fee, accommodation and any discount for your dates. Plan for living costs too. NEC suggests about NZ$1,625 a month to live in Nelson. There are no hidden costs, and all course materials are included. The Cambridge textbook and exam entry are part of that course price. For a rough figure first, try our cost of studying abroad calculator. Our advice is free.

What level of English do I need to start?

For General English, none at all. Complete beginners are welcome, and there is no academic entry requirement. A test on your first morning simply decides which class you join. For IELTS and Cambridge you pass an entry test first, so you sit the exam at a level where a good result is within reach. If you want to know your level before you book, NEC sends you a pre-test to sit at home.

How big are the classes?

14 students at most, and 12 in the Cambridge courses. NEC has about 110 students across 12 classrooms, so there are roughly 7.5 students per teacher. Every teacher holds at least a Cambridge CELTA or a Trinity CertTESOL. In your first week, the Director of Studies interviews you to check your level is right. Most students move up a level every 8 to 16 weeks.

What do NEC’s 23 hours a week include?

NEC shows you exactly where each hour goes. You get 20.75 hours of classroom teaching. You get up to 75 minutes a week of written feedback on the diary you keep. And there is question and answer time at the end of classes: about 45 minutes a week in the mornings and 20 in the afternoons. On top of that, a free activity runs after school every day, which takes you to about 27 hours of English a week. Part time is 15 hours, mornings only, and it is the choice of most students on a working holiday.

When can I start at Nelson English Centre?

General English, IELTS and the specialised courses start every Monday of the year. Cambridge First and Advanced run twice a year, in 9 and 12 week blocks. The 50+ course runs on set dates, so ask us for the next ones. The school closes on New Zealand public holidays, and those weeks are charged as normal. Tell us the month you have in mind, and we confirm the next start date with space for you, and any holidays that fall in your course.

Can I work while I am studying?

Yes, in most cases. If you study full time for 14 weeks or more at an NZQA Category 1 school like Nelson English Centre, you can work up to 25 hours a week. Before you book your flight, we check with you what your visa allows. Nelson is a region of hospitality and horticulture, so there is work to find. And NEC staff support you with your employer whenever you need it.

How young can a student be, and can a teenager travel alone?

NEC welcomes students from 14. If your son or daughter is under 18, they stay in accommodation the school arranges and safety checks, which in practice means a homestay. The school keeps in touch with you as parents, visits the house and interviews your child. The chief executive is personally responsible for students under 18 and can be reached at any hour. For a first trip alone, a small city and a host family make a gentle start.

What accommodation is available?

Most students choose a homestay, and it is what we recommend for a first stay. You get your own furnished room with a desk and internet. Breakfast and dinner are included on weekdays, and three meals a day at weekends. The school inspects every family and chooses one that matches you. Every homestay is within walking or cycling distance of the school. If you want more independence, Nelson has backpackers, studio apartments and share flats, and NEC will point you to the ones it knows. Ask us for a quote and we will price it for your dates.

Where exactly is Nelson English Centre?

At 41 Selwyn Place, in the centre of Nelson, a few minutes from the banks, the cafés, the post office and the bus station. The school has 12 classrooms, a self-study area with laptops to borrow, a student kitchen and a large student lounge. Wifi is free, and there is full wheelchair access to the classrooms, kitchen and toilets. Nelson Airport is a short drive away, with flights of about an hour from both Auckland and Christchurch.

What else does a course at NEC include?

Course materials are included, and the Cambridge textbook is already in that course price. You also get the placement test and a first-week interview with the Director of Studies. There is a free activity after school every day, and a graduation ceremony on Friday where the students who are leaving give a speech. You can use the school’s camping and sports gear for free, and the student lounge has free tea and coffee. The front desk helps you with doctors, banks, visa extensions and your employer. And your tuition is held by Public Trust, so your fees are protected.

Is Nelson English Centre accredited?

Yes. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority rates it Category 1, the highest of the four bands NZQA gives providers. It is also the band with the fewest restrictions on enrolling international students. At its last external evaluation and review, the NZQA rated the school highly confident. NEC is a member of IALC, the International Association of Language Centres, and according to the school it is one of only two IALC schools in New Zealand. It has signed the Code of Practice for the pastoral care of international students, which is mandatory in New Zealand. And it is an approved provider for the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission.

What is Nelson like to live in as a student?

Small, sunny and outdoors. Nelson has about 50,000 people, a centre you can cross on foot, a Saturday market, and three national parks within reach for a weekend. Abel Tasman is just an hour away. Most students walk or cycle to class, so you save on transport. NEC suggests around NZ$1,625 a month to live here. Evenings are relaxed, and the days are full. That is a big part of why students choose Nelson: you speak English from breakfast onwards.

How do I apply to Nelson English Centre from my country?

The form on this page is all you need to start. A ViveCampus advisor replies in your language with everything that depends on where you live: the documents your country needs, how long each step takes, how the New Zealand student visa works, the total cost and which start dates still have space. If you want to know your level first, we arrange the school’s pre-test for you. You don’t need to prepare anything before that chat, and our advice is free from start to finish.
