Tauranga, New Zealand

Why do students choose Tauranga?

A coastal city on the Bay of Plenty, with a sparkling harbour, surf beaches and islands all around. It suits students who want real progress in English and afternoons in the sea.

Study and work at the same time

English students on a full-time course of 14 weeks or more at a Category 1 school can work up to 25 hours a week. The right covers your whole visa, including the time before and after your course.

Surf at Mount Maunganui

Main Beach at Mount Maunganui brings classic rolling waves in from the Pacific. Book a surf lesson after class, and some schools even offer English and surfing courses with boards and wetsuits included.

Warm summers by the sea

In January and February, afternoons in Tauranga reach around 24 °C. In summer the sea warms to 21 °C or more, perfect for swimming, paddleboarding and long evenings on the sand.

Small classes, lots of speaking

Some schools keep classes small, with around 8 students. Your teacher hears you every morning, so you speak in every lesson and get your answers right away.

A city built around the water

Tauranga is surrounded by water, and locals love fishing, diving and swimming. Mount Mainstreet, in Mount Maunganui, is full of cafés, bars and boutique shops. In the city centre, The Strand brings a harbour boardwalk, restaurants and festivals.

High-quality, well-regulated schools

New Zealand’s English schools are quality-assured by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, and Category 1 is its top rating. We help you choose a Category 1 school, so your course can also qualify for work rights.

How do you choose the right English program in Tauranga?

These recommendations come from years of helping students study English in New Zealand. They draw on our educational consultants, the schools we work with, and above all the students who have lived the experience.

Recommendations and Considerations

Choosing the School - Start with the feel you want around your classes. Some schools are independent, with small classes of around 8 students, and some are official test centres, so you sit your exam where you study. Look at the schools on this page, and our consultants will match you with the one that fits you best.

Choosing the Program - General English builds all your skills, level by level. Cambridge, IELTS and TOEIC preparation target the exam you need, and academic preparation gets you ready for a New Zealand school or university. Some schools also pair your mornings with surfing, golf or activities around the Bay, or teach the English you need to land your first job on a working holiday. Choose the one that matches your goal.

Length of the Program - Length shapes what your time in Tauranga can include. You can start with 2 weeks and stay up to a full year. A full-time course of 14 consecutive weeks or more at a Category 1 school unlocks the right to work up to 25 hours a week. So many students plan for at least that. Every extra week adds more speaking, more friends and more of the Bay.

Minimum Age - Each school sets its own entry age, and most General English students are 18 or over. Younger students usually come to get ready for a New Zealand school. Tell us your son or daughter’s age from the start, and we will confirm the course and the accommodation that fit.

Minimum English Level - You can start at any level. If you are a complete beginner, some schools start you with one to one lessons, so you join a group ready to keep up. You sit a placement test on your first morning, so you join the class that fits you from day one.

Visa Regulations - Which document you need depends on how long you plan to study. A short course that fits inside a visit of up to three months can usually be done on an NZeTA or a visitor visa. A longer course runs on a student visa. Immigration New Zealand recommends applying for a student visa at least three months before you travel, and we prepare the paperwork with you.

Longer than 3 months Fee Paying Student Visa, with an offer of placeDepends on your countryUp to 25 hours a week on a qualifying course

Working While You Study - This is one of the best parts of studying in Tauranga. Your course needs to be full-time, at least 14 consecutive weeks long and at a university or an NZQA Category 1 school. Then your student visa can let you work part-time up to 25 hours a week. The adult minimum wage is NZD 23.95 an hour. Many schools finish classes by mid-afternoon, so evening and weekend shifts in cafés, shops and restaurants fit in nicely. And every shift is extra English practice.

Accommodation - Homestay places you with a local family chosen with your interests in mind. It is a wonderful way to settle in and practise English from breakfast. If you like to cook for yourself, some schools also offer a student apartment with a private room and a shared kitchen, bathroom and living area. Contact us and we will arrange the option that suits you.

Getting Around and Daily Life - Many students walk or cycle to class. Baybus runs the buses all over Tauranga, from Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa to the city centre. Pay with a Bee Card or cash. Students at an NZQA-registered school can load the tertiary concession onto a Bee Card. Then a ride within Tauranga costs NZD 1.60, as the Baybus fares show. MetService will tell you when the beach days are coming. Your school will help you arrange the health insurance your visa needs.

Costs Involved - Your budget covers tuition, accommodation, transport and daily life, and part-time work can make a real difference to it. At 25 hours a week on the adult minimum wage you can earn close to NZD 600 a week before tax. Tuition and accommodation vary by course and season, and the private transfer from Auckland goes in your quote too. Ask us for a current quote with all the numbers in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions students ask our advisors most often before booking an English course in Tauranga, covering work, visas, costs, schools and daily life. Wherever a rule applies, we point you to the official source.

Can I work while I study English in Tauranga?

Yes, on a qualifying course. Immigration New Zealand allows English language students to work part-time up to 25 hours a week. The course must be full-time, at least 14 consecutive weeks, and at a university or an NZQA Category 1 provider. The right covers your whole visa, including before and after your course. We help you choose a Category 1 school and plan a course that qualifies.

Do I need a visa to study English in Tauranga?

It depends on your course length and your passport. A short course that fits inside a visit of up to three months can usually be done on an NZeTA or on a visitor visa. The NZeTA costs from NZD 17 and is valid for two years. For longer courses you apply for a Fee Paying Student Visa, ideally at least three months before you travel. We prepare the paperwork with you.

How much does it cost to study English in Tauranga?

Your budget depends on the course, its length and how you choose to live. Tuition and accommodation vary by course and season, so we give you a personalised quote with all the numbers together, including the private transfer from Auckland. Part-time work helps too. At the adult minimum wage of NZD 23.95 an hour, it can bring in close to NZD 600 a week before tax on a qualifying course. Send us the contact form for your quote.

Which language schools do you work with in Tauranga?

You can see every school we work with in Tauranga on this page. Choose from General English, Cambridge, IELTS and TOEIC preparation, and academic preparation, or pair your English with surfing, golf or a working holiday. Tell us your goals and our consultants will help you pick the school and the course that fit.

Tauranga is a coastal city of more than 160,000 people on the Bay of Plenty, built around a sparkling harbour. Mount Maunganui is its beach suburb, with a surf beach and a main street full of cafés and shops. Pilot Bay and The Strand bring the harbour to your door. Waterfalls, regional parks and the whole Bay are within reach for a weekend. Explore ideas for your stay on Bay of Plenty NZ.

How do I get around Tauranga?

Many students walk or cycle to class. Baybus runs the buses all over Tauranga, from Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa to the city centre. You can pay with a Bee Card or cash. With the tertiary concession on your Bee Card, a trip within Tauranga costs NZD 1.60.

Do I need a certain level of English to start?

Not at all. You can start at any level, and complete beginners at some schools begin with one to one lessons before joining a group. You take a placement test on your first morning, so you join the class that fits you from day one.

What is the ISIC card and how do I get it?

The ISIC International Student Identity Card is recognised worldwide and gives you discounts on travel, attractions, food and shopping. Students who apply to an English program in Tauranga through ViveCampus receive it. It is a great way to make your budget go further while you explore the Bay of Plenty and the rest of New Zealand.

How long should my English course be?

Many students choose at least 14 weeks. A full-time course of that length at a Category 1 school is what unlocks the right to work up to 25 hours a week. You can book General English from 2 weeks to a full year. Tell us your goals and we will suggest the length that suits you.

Where can I check that a school is officially recognised?

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority quality-assures education providers and rates them, with Category 1 as its top rating. English New Zealand is the association of accredited English language schools. We help you choose a Category 1 school, so your course can qualify for work rights.
