8 countries, 22 cities, 3 languages
Most students come to us knowing which language they want to learn, but not yet where. That is the best way to start with Positively Languages: the class sizes, the care and the quality are the same in every school, so you choose the city you love.
For English, the USA gives you big cities and California sunshine, the UK has 8 schools from London to the seaside, Canada gives you Toronto and Vancouver, and Dublin and Malta let you work while you study on a long course. For French, choose Lyon, the capital of French food, Nice on the Riviera, or Montreux on Lake Geneva in Switzerland. For German, choose Berlin, the creative capital, or Freiburg, a green university city in the Black Forest. We will help you compare them before you choose.
What courses does Positively Languages offer?
19 programs in English, French and German, from a few weeks of General English to a University Pathway in Berlin or Lyon. Most start any Monday, and you can study from 1 to 52 weeks.
The course most students start with. You get 20 lessons a week, 15 hours, on grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing at your level. You take a placement test before you arrive and move up as soon as you are ready. Your afternoons stay free, so you have time to enjoy your city.
General English plus 7 P+ sessions a week on the school’s learning platform, for a total of about 20 hours. It is the middle option and one we recommend a lot: enough extra practice to speed up your progress, with time left to explore.
The fastest way to improve. You take 20 core lessons, 8 Specific Skills lessons on what you need most, and 7 P+ sessions, about 26 hours a week. This is the course that comes with Guaranteed Progress: one level every 10 weeks in the USA, the UK, Canada and Ireland. Perfect if you have a set number of weeks and want the most out of them.
English for work: meetings, presentations, negotiation and professional emails. You can take it as an Intensive course, or add 8 Business lessons to General English. It is a great choice if you want English that shows on your CV.
The exam for universities and visas in the UK, Canada, Ireland and beyond. You practise all four parts with mock tests and exam timing. Dublin and Edinburgh are specialists, and Edinburgh is an official exam centre for Trinity. In Ireland and Canada the Intensive option has 28 IELTS lessons a week.
The exam American universities ask for, taught in New York, Boston and Toronto. You get a full practice test every 2 weeks. After 8 weeks, Positively Languages promises you 10 more points if you start between 55 and 74, or 5 more if you start between 75 and 91.
Preparation for the Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced exams, timed to the official exam dates. A Cambridge certificate never expires, so it stays on your CV for life. You can study 15 or 21 hours a week, depending on the option.
Your route into a college or university in Canada. You study academic English for 5 to 20 weeks, and then go straight into a partner institution without an IELTS score. With 5 weeks or more you can also use the University Placement Service.
6 months to a year abroad, built around what you want next. You can add a second language with French or German, or a work readiness program. It is a great way to fill a year between school and university, or between two jobs.

What should you know before enrolling at Positively Languages?
The things worth sorting out before you book, from the Positively Languages website and brochure, and from what students ask us every week.
Costs, Dates, Application Process and other Considerations
Application Process - Send us the contact form and an advisor will reply with the steps for your country and the cities you like. Each country asks for its own documents, so we give you a clear checklist. You take a level test before you travel, so you start in the right class on your first morning. If you are under 18, we confirm the supervision, the accommodation and the airport transfer in writing before anything is booked. We prepare and submit the application with you, in whichever country you choose.
Dates of the Program - Most English courses start any Monday of the year: General, Semi-Intensive and Intensive English, Business English, IELTS, TOEFL and the 30+ courses. In French and German, complete beginners start on set dates about once a month, and we confirm the dates for every other level. The Cambridge courses follow the exam dates, the Young Adults program runs in July and August, and CELTA in Dublin has its own dates. Tell us the month you have in mind and we will confirm what is open.
Length of the Program - From 1 week to a full year. Most courses in English, French and German run from 1 to 52 weeks. The Gap Year lasts 6 months to a year, and the Young Adults program runs 2 to 7 weeks. For long stays, your visa decides the maximum, and we check that with you before you book.
Costs - The price depends mostly on the city. The same English course with the same guarantee costs less in Bournemouth, Liverpool or Toronto than in New York or London, which gives you plenty of room to fit your budget. Use the form at the bottom of this page and you get the full quote in writing: tuition, registration, materials, accommodation, transfers and this month’s promotion. Our cost of studying abroad calculator gives you a first figure for each city too.
Health Insurance - Each country has its own rule. In the USA, medical cover is a must for students, and good cover lets you enjoy your stay with peace of mind. Canada, Ireland and Malta ask for private medical insurance, and so do France, Germany and Switzerland for your whole stay. In the UK, a course over 6 months includes the Immigration Health Surcharge with the visa, which gives you the NHS. For a shorter stay, you take travel and medical insurance. Positively Languages can arrange cover, and we confirm what your city and course need before you pay.
Minimum Age - 16 for the adult courses at every school, in English, French and German. If you are 16 to 20, the Young Adults summer program gives you supervision, activities and friends your age. The 30+ courses are for students of 30 and over, and Bath has courses for students over 50. In the English schools, homestays start at 16 and student residences at 18.
Minimum English Level - You can start General, Semi-Intensive and Intensive English, and General French or German, as a complete beginner. The specialist courses ask for a bit more: B1 for IELTS, intermediate for Business English and B2 for TOEFL and English for Academic Pathways. You take a level test before you start, and you move up as soon as you are ready.
Visa Regulations - It depends on the country, your passport and how long you stay. For a short course, many nationalities can study in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Malta, France, Germany or Switzerland as a visitor, up to 90 days in the Schengen area. The USA asks for an F-1 student visa when you study more than 18 hours a week. In the UK, the Short-term study visa covers English courses of 6 to 11 months. Long courses in the other countries need a student visa or study permit. Positively Languages issues the documents you need, and we prepare the application with you at no extra cost.
Working While You Study: - Dublin and Malta are the places to look. In Ireland, on an English course of 25 weeks or more from the official list, you can work 20 hours a week during term and 40 in the holidays. In Malta, on a course of more than 90 days, you can work up to 20 hours a week after your first 3 months. If working is part of your plan, tell us first and we will build your trip around it.
Accommodation - Positively Languages arranges accommodation in every city, so comparing destinations is easy. A homestay is what we recommend for your first stay: you practise the language at dinner every night. Student residences give you independence, a kitchen and most of the social life. Depending on the city, you can also choose shared apartments or studios, like the student studios with a kitchenette in Lyon. Write to us and we will price each option in the cities you like.
Extra Curricular Activities - Every school runs a social program, so you make friends from the first week. Think walking tours, museums, sports, film nights and weekend trips, with a flavour of each city. Boston and Cambridge lean academic, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara lean outdoors, and Edinburgh and Dublin lean towards festivals and music. In Lyon you can join cheese and wine tastings, Nice takes you to Monaco and Cannes, and Montreux has water sports on the lake.
Airport Pickup - Positively Languages arranges airport transfers, and we book yours with the course. If you are under 18, the transfer is part of the plan. After a long flight, it is lovely to find someone waiting for you with your name on a sign.
First day of classes - You take your level test before you travel, so your first morning is a welcome session, a quick placement check and a tour of the school. You get your timetable and your logins, and classes start the same day. On an Intensive English course, you also hear how Guaranteed Progress works, because it counts from your first class.
Remember that living costs are usually a bigger part of your budget than the course. Compare the whole picture before you choose your city

What do students say about studying at Positively Languages?
Two students, in their own words. Alejandra studied in New York, right next to Central Park, and Eduardo in London, where he ended up as a student ambassador. Between them they cover what people ask us about most: how fast your English improves and the friends you make along the way.
Studying at Kaplan New York (now Positively Languages) was one of the best experiences of my life! The location is amazing, right next to Central Park and close to so many famous places in the city. I loved being able to explore New York after classes. What surprised me the most was how quickly my English improved. The teaching method really works! In just a few weeks, I was speaking with much more confidence, something I honestly thought would take me years. I’m so happy I made this decision!
I had such a great time studying in London. The classes were really good, but I think what made my experience special were all the activities outside the classroom. There was always something going on, and it was super easy to meet people from different countries. After two months, I actually became one of the student ambassadors because I loved meeting new students and helping them feel welcome. That was probably one of my favorite parts of the whole experience. Also, a big thank you to ViveCampus for helping me with everything, from choosing the program to getting ready for London.
